Melrose Place
[Wilshire Memorial] Thanks to Potsie Weber, who's again directing this week we start with one of those everyone-on-the-show-appears scenes that lasts forever. Michael finishes examining Amanda when Peter walks in. Amazingly enough, despite being flung through a plate glass window and landing 30 feet below, Amanda suffered nary a scratch on that pretty face of hers. Michael notices Peter didn't fare as well, and asks about the tampon taped to his forehead. Peter looks at the report on Amanda and gasps. "Yeah, I was going to tell you about that." Meanwhile, in the hallway outside of Amanda's room, Ryan and Megan find Kyle pacing about. "It's all my fault Amanda got hurt!" Kyle cries. Ryan tries to console his brother, saying "You pushed her because you were in rehab." Megan, the third Stooge of this trio, says, "Have a cup of coffee. The caffeine will settle your nerves." Kyle agrees, so Megan and Ryan go for some. Ryan says to Megan, "I know that Kyle and Peter fighting and Amanda coming in and trying to break it up has something to do with Peter and Amanda." Gee whiz, with an eye for the obvious like that, Ryan should quit advertising immediately and get into private investigation! They walk away and Eve makes her entrance. "Hey!" she barks at nurse Dena. "Where's my man?" Nurse Dena replies, "Dr. Burns is still with *that* patient" causing Eve to bite down on her lip. Jane enters next, and tries to console Eve, saying Amanda's a fighter. Eve could care less and tells Jane to leave her alone. Then Michael and Peter emerge from Amanda's room and Michael announces that Amanda's alright, and nothing major happened. Unless, that is, you consider miscarriage major. "Amanda lost the baby," Peter tells Kyle. But when Peter suggests Kyle be the one to break the news to Amanda, Kyle replies." Why? You are the father." Amanda gets wheeled into her private room, Kyle runs into the parking lot wanting to punch something, and Peter finds Eve. Peter greets Eve by saying, "I'm sorry I haven't been able to talk to you." She replies with a slap across his face and a "YOU BASTARD!" When Peter asks what Kyle said to her, she corrects Peter by telling him (at the top of her voice) that *she* was the one who told Kyle that Peter and Amanda were having an affair, sleeping in hotels together, and how they were planning on keeping the baby-thing a secret. "Have you lost your mind?" Peter asks. "There is no baby, thanks to you. Amanda lost the baby. The baby died." Eve tells Peter he and Amanda can rot in hell and runs out. Peter wants to run after her, but Michael stops him saying, "You should wait until you cool off." Which is funny, since Peter seems to be the only one in the with a cool head. Megan and Jane ask Michael a dumber question, if Peter really is the father. And speaking of dumb, Ryan, the dumbest of them all, goes outside to find Kyle and to wipe the chagrin off his face. "Amanda lost the baby" Kyle tells Ryan. So Ryan replies with things like, "Wow, I knew Peter and Amanda were close, but not that close," and comforting words like "But you couldn't have" after Kyle describes the most incredible night of lovemaking in his life a couple months back and how he and Amanda thought for sure they had made a baby. Peter, now back in his office, picks up the mess that Kyle had made last week. Michael has a heart-to-heart with him, telling him not to handle the miscarriage badly, like he did with Jane. Peter tries to convince Michael the baby is not his. Peter is just upset that Eve is so stupid, believing the baby rumors so readily. Peter goes into Amanda's room to tell her the bad news. Amanda quips, "The last time I was in here, I couldn't move my legs. I hope you have better news for me this time." Peter answers, "Yeah, you're gonna be fine. This time, it's your baby who won't be able to move its legs. Amanda, you lost the baby," which has been repeated so many times already this episode that I'm just thankful for the copy-and-paste feature of my word processor.
[Streets of Melrose] Eve wanders down an empty street, contemplating the same things that are probably going through Kyle's head. Then she goes to the nearest phone booth and calls someone who cares. "I know I'm not supposed to talk to you, but can I come over? No, I know the address."
[MP Courtyard] Ryan returns home, only to find Lexi on his doorstep like the morning paper. Lexi wants to show her concern, but felt showing up the hospital would only aggravate the situation. Which she's right, because the one she's more concerned about is Ryan, not Amanda or Kyle. She asks Ryan how he's doing through all of this. Then Lexi blames herself, saying she should've kept her mouth shut about seeing Peter and Amanda at the hotel that one night. Ryan puts it more eloquently when he says, "This whole thing sucks." (Obviously referring to the writing of Carol Mendelsohn and Cynthia J. Cohen) Ryan continues, "If those two can't make a relationship work, nobody can." Then he leaks to Lexi a little more about his past: "I've been in several relationships myself, and let me tell you, Love is never enough. There were always a few things I couldn't share." "Like what?" Lexi asks. Ryan answers, "I can't share that."
[San Pedro Docks, Slip 57] Eve ends up in San Pedro. She looks around to make sure the coast is clear, then heads down to a ship aptly named, the "Old Lady," by its shoddy appearance. The boat turns out to be owned by Jackie Zambrano, a friend of Eve's from when they shared a "concrete condo" together. Now for those of you who have been waiting for a replacement token minority figure, like aerobics instructor Rhonda, this may be it! Jackie isn't some fancy-suited exec or lawyer type, just a plain, simple, ex-con. She's just finished making some tea, since that's what girls like. Eve says she can't make it in the real world, and how it was so much easier to be special in prison. "Isn't that amazing?" Eve asks.
[Wilshire Memorial] Kyle finally becomes man enough to visit Amanda. Kyle tells Amanda he's got it all figured out, that Amanda kept loving Peter and that's why she let him rent an apt in the building and confessed to Matt about it in his diary. Kyle still rejects the fact that it's his baby, and informs Amanda he's moving out, showing how dangerous it is for certain people to think. "Adios" he says and leaves.
[MP Courtyard] Lexi comes over to offer her condolences to Kyle, saying "I'm sorry about someone's baby." Kyle is busy moving his stuff out of Amanda's and into his old apt. Lexi follows him up, and manages to "trick" the elder McBride into spilling his guts about Ryan's previous broken engagements. Kyle lets it slip that Ryan was engaged to 3 corporate presidents in NYC. Which is just enough information for Lexi to go on hunt them down.
[Burns-Mancini Medical Office] Peter asks his receptionist if they ever got the actual paperwork regarding McBride's test results. The receptionist, one of the few that's worked there that actually does receptionist-things, says she doesn't believe they did, so Peter orders her to get a copy of the results pronto!, or FAX, whichever is quicker. Then Eve's parole officer pays Peter a visit, giving him the obvious news, that Eve missed another appointment and that he'll issue a warrant for her arrest unless she's found.
[San Pedro Docks, Slip 57] Eve and her ex-con friend Jackie shoot the sh!t over breakfast. Eve tells Jackie that she can never go back to Peter. Jackie says, "I just don't get it. In your letters, you made it seem like he was this great guy." Which leads me to ask, "I don't get it. Why, when Eve called from the pay phone, did Jackie ask Eve if she needed the address? How else would the letters have gotten to her? Huh?" Eve goes on about Peter's infidelity. Then Eve suggests the two of them sail around the world, saying she's got some money (at least a couple night's pay from the club!) and would take care of everything. Jackie hesitates, saying "I gotta a job. Plans. I'm looking to do things right for once." Eve says, "Exactly. We'll break parole. Run around. No one will catch us. We'll do it together." Hmm, Eve really has lost her mind.
[AWA] Lexi pays Ryan a visit, just to tell him she's landed an account with a corporation in NY, who's president is an ex-fiancee of his. Ryan turns to jello, asking Lexi if she mentioned any of this to Megan yet. Ryan pulls Lexi into his office, where Lexi fools the dufus with less effort than was required when she tricked Kyle earlier. Lexi says she will only represent her client, if it doesn't make Ryan uncomfortable. Ryan asks Lexi which fiancee Sterling/Conway is representing, but Lexi tells him he'll have to guess. So Ryan blurts out, "It's not Robyn Marlowe is it?" "No." "Well, then is it Gail Lenvin?" "Nope." "So, it must be Jennifer Helms?" Practically the only thing else Ryan could've done to be more helpful was to give Lexi a pad and pencil to write the girls' names down. Lexi tells Ryan she's decided against taking Jennifer's business, as a favor to him. He thanks her from the bottom of his idiotic heart.
[MP, Peter's Apt] Admittedly, this episode has got to be one of the stupidest: First, the scene at Wilshire Memorial with all the bozos spreading the rumor about Peter and Amanda and the baby; Kyle thinking he's got it all figured out; Kyle giving Lexi info about Ryan; Eve wanting to break parole and run around the world; Ryan giving even more info about his past fiancees to Lexi; but now, for some reason, Peter has Jane and Michael over at his apt, looking for a "clue" that might lead them to where Eve is? C'mon, this is getting pretty pathetic? Anyway, the 3 scrounge around for something, when there's a delivery for Peter. It turns out it's the videotape that Audrey mailed last week. Peter pops it in his VCR, causing Jane to blush. Of course, this week she wants a divorce and she runs out of Peter's place. Peter then demands Michael return the $2 million and kicks Michael out. Needless to say, Peter leaves the tape running in the VCR.
[San Pedro Docks, Slip 57] Jackie pops in saying, "Look, I got us a couple maps." Well, it sounds as if the two of them are all set. They plan on sailing to Mexico and Central America. Eve has a look of hesitation on her face, but assures Jackie she can fall out of love just as easily as she fell in. Then the two women hug and kiss, just like they must've done behind prison bars. If Matt had only known, maybe he would've turned to shoplifting...
[Burns-Mancini Medical Office] Outside the building, Jackie waits for Peter. As he approaches the front doors, she stops him and tells him she's an old roommate of Eve's and has become a roommate once again. He tells her to tell Eve to get back here, but Jackie informs him they're planning a long trip to Mexico. Jackie "aks" Peter why Eve shouldn't go, and Peter answers, "Me." So Jackie gives him the address of her boat.
[The Plaza, NYC] Lexi invites Ryan's 3 ex's together in for lunch at The Plaza. None of the women know who this Lexi character is, or why she invited them. Still, despite being presidents of corporations in one of the world's fastest paced cities, these three execs managed to find time to have lunch with this stranger from California! Once Lexi has them together, she informs them their common bond is none other than Ryan McBride. They laugh. Then Lexi gets the scoop on Ryan and commitment from each of them, under the pretense that she only wants the best between her friend Megan and Ryan. It seems all three women proposed to Ryan, and with equally fatal results. One woman described engagement as the "kiss of death." Once Ryan gets engaged, he runs away. They all chuckle.
[San Pedro Docks, Slip 57] Peter calls out Eve's name. Eve is surprised, wondering how he found her. Peter tells her to come home, but she is still obsessed with Amanda and the baby and the word "affair." Peter keeps his cool, despite all of Eve's accusations, telling her he loves her, he's not the father, and she belongs with him. Eve tells him she's having a hard time even remembering how she could have loved him in the first place. Peter tells her he's always loved her. Then he turns and starts to walk away. Suddenly, Eve farts, and that bug up her ass dislodges. She realizes what a bitch she's been, and runs up the gangplank after her husband, gasping that she loves him too. They hug.
[Wilshire Memorial] Eve shows up at Amanda's bed to apologize saying, "We were always competing for the same guy. I didn't want you to win again." Not much of an apology, but Amanda isn't really in the forgiving mood anyway, and lets Eve know it. "I'm not fine. My baby's dead. Do you know how much that hurts? You chose to believe the ridiculous (i.e., Kyle, Ryan, Lexi, Megan, the list goes on and on.)" Eve replies, "I honestly didn't think about it."
[Burns-Mancini Medical Office] Peter's receptionist tells Peter that the V.A. Hospital has not responded to her requests; that either they don't answer or she gets a recording. She may only be in college, but she'll soon learn it's this way with all government-related phone numbers. Michael then shows up, begging for mercy. Michael promises to pay for the money, even if this means working even after the show's been canceled. Peter has a heart and agrees to let Michael continue to work in order to pay back the settlement and Children's Fund embezzlement, with interest.
[MP Courtyard] Eve returns home where Kyle catches her in the courtyard. "Eve, I thought you left?" Eve tells Kyle that she was about to, but then she and Peter worked things out. Kyle says, "He cheated on you once, he'll do it again" causing Eve to answer back, "Peter and Amanda did not sleep together." So Kyle, calling the kettle black, says "Did he brainwash you or are you just stupid?" Kyle tells Eve he's running away back to Boston and gives Eve the advice any coward would: "You should run away from here too, before it kills you or lands you right back in prison."
[Wilshire Memorial] Kyle visits Amanda again, and loves her so much that he tells her he's leaving her for good and moving back to Boston. He drops off the deed to the club, giving her full ownership. She can't believe he's running away while she's down. He shrugs his shoulders. She begs him to take a DNA test again before running away, because she will not have him leaving thinking she betrayed him. He walks out of her room, then fondles one of his nipples through his cotton shirt while standing in the hallway.
[Sterling/Conway Enterprises] Lexi convinces Megan to propose to Ryan. As with the other dolts Lexi's had to deal with this episode, it doesn't take much effort on her part to convince her unsuspecting victim to do what she wants. Lexi tosses Megan a New Century Brides catalog, saying she wants Megan to handle the account since she'll soon be a bride herself. Megan looks at her with those doe-in-the-headlights eyes of hers. Need I say more?
[V.A. Hospital, Hematology Lab] Peter visits the lab at the V.A. Hospital. The same lab technician who goofed up the tests earlier, is still paying more attention to chewing his food than doing his job. At least continuity for this show hasn't gone to hell. Peter demands to see the file for McBride and has to wrestle it away from the technician. Peter discovers that there had been a clerical error and that Kyle is bursting with active sperm. "We regret any inconvenience this may have caused."
[LAX] Ryan is with Kyle, as they wait for the boarding call for Kyle's red-eye back to Beantown. Ryan tries to cheer Kyle up, saying, "I almost feel bad things are going so well for me." Ryan says if Kyle needs some numbers run for his new restaurant or club, he's there for him. Then Ryan adds that he's planning on giving notice to Amanda, because he just can't work for her anymore. They share a brotherly moment.
[Wilshire Memorial] Peter runs into Amanda's room to give her the results of Kyle's fertility test. He would've been there sooner, but had emergency surgery and in all the turmoil, he forgot what a phone is for. When Amanda sees the results of the test she exclaims "This is like a bad joke. I lost everything due to a clerical error." Peter nods in agreement, as if to imply Aaron Spelling is a sick and twisted sadist. Peter tells Amanda she needs to get this to Kyle ASAP, but Amanda whines that she doesn't even know the airline Kyle's on, and furthermore, she'll never make it to the airport in 20 minutes. Peter quips that this is the sort of situation where being Chief-of-Staff really pays off. He then arranges the hospital's only helicopter to fly Amanda to LAX, where Kyle is waiting on Midway Flight 101. Getting Amanda to the airport is much more important than having the chopper ready for any sort of life-threatening emergency. After all, this isn't any old guest star, this one is "special."
[AWA] Michael tries to convince Jane to come back to him, saying, "I was trying to cheat on the hospital, not you." He promises to do anything, including going to Compulsive Sexualholics Anonymous, promising to give her her space while he's being healed. "I'll even move out of the apt complex if that makes you happy." But Jane tells him that won't be necessary, because she bought their old beach house. "I told my father the situation and he wired me the money." Chalk one more up on the list of stupidity -- how convenient that their old beach house is suddenly on the market again, and two, if she wanted to forget Michael and the memories so badly, why would she go and buy back their old home? Even Potsie can't answer this one.
[LAX] The helicopter lands inches away from the Midway flight (I'm sure LAX allows this every day.) Then Amanda, who has newfound strength, runs toward the airplane yelling, "Kyle! Kyle!" She shows him the test results. Amanda yells, "You're not sterile, you're as dirty as scum!" She's so happy. Kyle, Mr. Dumbfounded, asks "What? It was our baby? I killed our baby?" Well, if you put it that way, yes. But Amanda, always the diplomat, says, "No. You didn't kill our baby, just like you didn't torch our dream house. And I love you for it. Please don't get on that plane." Kyle stares off into the darkness for a bit, lets a few more bars of Sarah McLachlan play, then says, "Oh well, sorry about that." They hug, blocking the line of people who still plan on going to Boston, and causing the only blemish in Midway's stellar on-time record for departures.
