Not Quite All About Eve

Melrose Place
Episode #203 / Season #7
Title:  "Not Quite All About Eve"
Original Air Date:  Monday, October 19, 1998

[Upstairs Jazz Club]

For those who can barely remember what they ate last night for dinner, I'm sure trying to recall where Melrose Place left off is bound to induce a brain hemorrhage, so let me spare you the pain: Lexi had stormed into the jazz club and was just about to nark on Peter, who, by the way, was quick on her heels. Well, this is the directing debut for Jack Wagner, and wouldn't you just know it, somehow Peter manages to run up and stop Lexi from spilling the beans! How convenient. Before Lexi can divulge Peter's secret, Peter grabs her and asks, "Do you really hate me this much?" Lexi turns to him, crinkles her face (shades of Billy cause a shudder to run through my body), then storms out. Peter apologizes to Amanda and Kyle for the disturbance before running out after Lexi. Peter catches her in the parking lot, where he tells her the reason she didn't say anything to Amanda was because she still loves Peter too much. and knows if he went to jail, it'd be someone other than her making love to him. So Lexi gives Peter a smack on the cheek, the open-fisted kind. Lexi snaps, "If you think this buys you time to get Amanda back, you are wrong. I'm taking her down, before you even get close. I'm going to show you what a sorry-ass bitch she really is." Then she peels rubber out of the lot. Kyle witnesses the entire incident from behind the glass window of the jazz club.

[Beach House]

Jane is positioned behind Michael, lying in bed. Suddenly, Michael wakes and yells, "Hey, hey, what's going on?" "Sex is going on" Jane answers. Apparently, the straps on her shoulders aren't the only ones she sporting, as she continues to press and gyrate from her rear position. Michael breathes a sigh of relief, realizing it was just Jane grabbing him from behind and that it was all a dream, that he wasn't really in prison. Of course, we don't get a dream sequence this time. What a gyp. We haven't been privy to anything of that sort since Matt was on the show. Jane tells Michael she wants to set a date for the wedding, but Michael takes this to mean she must be guilty of something and is trying to hide it. He jumps out of bed and into the shower.

[MP, Amanda and Kyle's Apt]

Despite the excellent workout equipment just sitting there on the bed waiting to be used, Kyle would rather get his exercise by doing pushups on the floor. Kyle says to the equipment, "I'm going to play B-ball with Ryan this morning." Then Kyle and brings up the missing page of the journal again. Amanda groans, realizing the jughead she's living with has only one thing on his mind, and unfortunately, it's not the usual "one thing." Kyle wonders aloud (he reads this way, too) what info Lexi had that was so important she needed to tell Amanda. Meanwhile, Amanda heads to the bathroom for a cold shower. Does it work the same way for women?

[MP Courtyard]

Ryan catches Megan leaving for work. I guess the ad agency she works for has to actually work during the day, unlike the one employing Ryan, who's heading out for fun and games at this time of the morn. Again, Ryan pesters Megan for a date. She won't go on one, but agrees to have dinner with him instead. He is confused. He is a McBride.

[Burns-Mancini Medical Office]

Michael broods over his predicament with Jane, while Peter wields a butter knife with the dexterity of a surgeon, applying cream cheese and some red stuff onto his perfectly incised bagel. Michael tells Peter he's setting up another dinner engagement between Jane and Alex tomorrow night at the beach house.

[Sterling-Conway Enterprises]

Later that same morning, Kyle drops by to ask Lexi what she wanted to tell Amanda at the bar last night. Lexi, trying to get in on all the miniskirt Monday hoopla, does an admirable job of it in this scene, making her point nicely with a pair of stiletto heels. She tells Kyle it was just some lie about her and Peter being back together, but Kyle doesn't buy it. Kyle tells her he wants to crush Peter, but Lexi informs Kyle, it's not Peter she wishes to destroy. Kyle is a McBride, so without understanding Lexi's comment, tells her he still wants in. Their little meeting gets interrupted when Megan pops lightheadedly in and says, "Helllooo. I'm back from the soap wars." Then, with the most feeling ever put into the delivery of one line, Kyle points to Megan and says, "My brother has a crush on you." (And we wonder why the show is without Emmy?) Kyle leaves. For some reason, when Lexi hears that Kyle's got a brother, more than her breasts perk up and she asks Megan for the scoop. Megan tells her she's going to dinner with the other McBride, but it's not a date. Lexi offers to chaperone and Megan accepts.

[L.A. Club]

Megan, Ryan, and Lexi sit and talk, although the way the music is blaring it's a wonder they can hear anything. Lexi says she's impressed how Ryan tried to steal Megan's soap campaign back a couple of episodes ago, although considering Megan had zilch, only a dufus or a McBride would consider such a crime. Lexi offers Ryan a job at Sterling-Conway, but Ryan declines the offer, saying he hasn't even worked at AWA's long enough to quit.

[Upstairs]

It's the eve, and some girl by the same name is singing on stage, apparently auditioning for a gig at the club. Her tinny voice causes my tweeters to crackle, as well as Kyle's eardrums, and he tells Eve, "Look, I'm running a rock and roll club and you got a really folkie sound." She says she really needs a job and can sing "any way" he wants, if he'd only give her another chance. Instead, Kyle gives her David Silver's number and wishes her the best of luck. Eve runs out of the club, but bumps into Peter, who is stumbling out himself. He grabs her, asking if she's alright. When she says yes, he holds her and asks her again, then one more time. Finally, Peter lets her go and she steps off the curb just as a car comes around the corner, tires screeching. Why is it people feel they gotta be heard when they leave this place is beyond me. Anyway, the front of the car hits Eve and she collapses to the ground. This time, even I can tell she's not alright. Peter yells, "Somebody get me a phone." (I was always taught to yell "You, call 9-1-1!") If anything positive can be taken from this scene, it's the fact that the Ford passed the new, more stringent 5-mph bumper-into-pedestrian crash test unscathed.

[MP, Amanda and Kyle's Apt]

The next morning, Amanda reads the front page article in the newspaper, announcing Sterling-Conway Enterprises' plan to get into the advertising business. Kyle asks if this is a problem. Amanda vows to put up a fight if Lexi thinks she can takeover AWA. Kyle, still waiting for an answer, asks if this is a problem. Amanda leaves the room, I guess to take another cold shower, leaving Kyle (bidding for the title of brainless of the two McBrides) remains at the table, asking "Is this a problem?"

[Wilshire Memorial]

Eve is in the hospital and Peter is checking her out. She wants to know why Peter is being so nice to her, but retracts her remark when Peter tells her he's keeping her there for a few more days and then forces her to eat the hospital food that's been hardening at her bedside like the arteries of the guy in the next room. Peter concludes, "I think last night's episode was probably just caused by dehydration." Hmm, and I thought it was due to a car bumper smashing into her side. But then, that's why I'm not a doctor. Nurse Lynn enters and delivers a note to Peter, which is written in a female's handwriting: "Peter, Meet me at the club at 2 am. -Amanda"

[Kyle's the Restaurant]

Lexi and Megan talk about using Ryan as a window into Amanda's company, but Megan is uneasy about using Ryan as a spy.

[Beach House]

Michael has Alex over for dinner and asks him to design Jane's wedding dress. Since Jane wanted to set a date, Michael says he's reserved a church two weeks from now for the wedding. Now, the only Church's I know of that can service you that quick is the fried chicken joint. Then Michael announces he's off to a medical convention for a few days and leaves Jane and Alex alone. Michael sneaks around to the back porch where he can watch what happens next. Alex suggests he measure Jane for the wedding dress, so Jane goes to get her tape measure, which she keeps in her dresser alongside her bras and panties. I guess that way, the tape measure would feel at home as Alex lays it across similar undergarments still on Jane's body. For the record, Jane lets Alex know that she loves Michael and plans on marrying him. Of course, Michael doesn't hear any of this but can only see Alex working his tape measure across Jane, to and fro. The frustration builds in Michael, causing him to knock over a watering can. Quickly, he jumps over the rail and hides as Jane and Alex open the glass door to investigate the source of the noise.

[Upstairs]

Peter arrives at a vacant club. When he calls out Amanda's name, Kyle appears from the shadows, saying that he was the one that wrote the note. Peter must be thinking, Kyle may be a marine, but he's sure got rather effeminate handwriting. Kyle wants to play a drinking game, which may soon replace the Official Melrose Place version since there are so few rules, i.e., basically to deliver a verbal low blow about your opponent then shoot a whiskey. Peter wins the game when he comments about the incident when he broke into Amanda and Kyle's apt looking for the missing journal page, saying he thinks it must say something about how Amanda loves him, and how she can never throw it away, but rather how she probably reads it over, and over, and over. Kyle grabs Peter, causing him to drop his shot glass, and tells Peter he could kill him right then and there. Kyle leaves and Peter is so flustered that he takes Kyle's shot and downs it by mistake.

[AWA]

Amanda orders Ryan not to see Megan, fearing that Megan might catch glimpse of company confidential material strewn about Ryan's apt and steal away a client. Ryan shows her by saying, "Oh yeah?"

[Burns-Mancini Medical Office]

Peter arrives to work and finds Michael hiding out in his office. Jane then shows up, asking if Peter knew where Michael is. Peter answers, "You look stunning today, Jane." (Despite the fact she's still wearing the same blouse as yesterday.) Jane heads into Michael's office, figuring maybe there's an itinerary laying on the desk. Michael, meanwhile, is hiding under the desk. So Peter asks Jane to tell him just what Alex means to her. Peter figures if Michael hears Jane confess her love for Michael, not knowing he's there, that it should be proof enough that she really is faithful. Jane admits she had the affair with Alex but adds, "I had no idea it was going to affect him [Michael] the way it has. I mean, why can't he be more understanding, like Hillary?" Jane tells Peter she is in love with Michael and then leaves. Michael crawls out from under the desk, but instead of being satisfied with what he heard, he's even more upset, figuring she's hiding something.

[AWA]

Julie, the secretary, informs Amanda of several clients who have been in discussions with Sterling-Conway Enterprises, and who may potentially jump ship. Amanda confronts Ryan, asking him how Lexi could have gotten ahold of her client list. Ryan tries to state his innocence, but Amanda fires him, saying she can't retain anyone she doesn't fully trust. Ryan can't believe it, saying "I've also been around long enough to smell a set-up. And this one stinks." Which most set-ups do. Besides, it sounded much more dramatic than if he had said, "And this one smells scrumptious!"

[Sterling-Conway Enterprises]

Ryan storms into Lexi's office for a word. He tells her he was fired by Amanda, accused of selling Sterling-Conway Enterprises the AWA client list, even though he hadn't. Then he offers Lexi a deal, tossing her a stack of paper which contains detailed marketing strategies for all of AWA's clients. Lexi admits her insider couldn't get information this succulent since she's only a secretary. Ryan promises more where that came from as long as Lexi promises him a nice cushy job. Lexi accepts his offer, saying "I think I can slip you in somewhere." Sounds like Lexi's been hanging around Megan too long and some of Megan's lingo is starting to rub off on her.

[Wilshire Memorial]

Amanda goes to the hospital to see Eve, but runs into Peter first. Peter mentions the little game he played with Kyle last night, adding, "We had a couple of drinks and, well he lost control, threatened to kill me. You know, the usual." Peter then gets paged, but before he goes, he says that Kyle believes the missing page has something to do with Peter and Amanda. Peter says, "I think he's right." Amanda heads over to Eve's hospital room and asks Eve how she's doing, to which Eve responds, "I'm surviving." Amanda then tells Eve if she wants to do more than just survive, she's got to do something about her hair. At this point, I almost expected a L'Oreal hair color commercial to chime in on the TV in the room...

[Alex Bastion's Residence]

Jane scoots on over to Alex's house in her Beetle, Michael tailing her in his Mustang. He scales the walls to the property in order to spy on them, but gets preoccupied with the pit bull guarding the home. Meanwhile, Jane starts talking about work but Alex interrupts her, knowing there's something else on her mind. So Jane tells Alex that she's afraid Michael is having an affair with Megan. Alex seizes the opportunity, recommending she not marry Michael. He takes it one step further by telling her he still loves her and asks her to come live with him. Jane is taken aback by the Bastion. She leaves, somewhat flustered. Michael, meanwhile, hears just enough to think he's losing Jane. Not only that, he loses one of his penny loafers to the dog! Too bad for Michael he doesn't have two Janes.

[AWA]

Ryan shows up, wanting to speak with Amanda. He tells her who the informant is, pointing out Julie, hired after Billy's departure, who seems to be doing more work than Billy but never getting any recognition. When confronted, Julie apologizes, saying the money was too good to pass up. Needless to say, she's fired. Amanda apologizes to Ryan, then offers him his job back, along with a salary increase and his own office. Lexi shows up to toss stack of marketing strategies in Ryan's face, saying they're no good 10-yr old documents. Considering MP didn't start until 1992, I'm guessing they were just a bunch of papers from either Spelling's "Dynasty" or "Hotel."

[Beach House]

Michael returns home from his "convention." Jane intimates that she no longer trusts Michael, and they both head into separate rooms in a huff.

[Open House]

Amanda and Kyle stroll up the front walkway to an enormous estate, while talking about giving Eve a second chance at the club. Once inside, Kyle states the obvious, "This place is huge." Soon, however, their talk turns back to the missing journal page and Peter. Kyle jumps to the conclusion that the missing page is about Peter and that is still Amanda trying to protect her ex-husband. "It makes me sick!" Kyle blurts out. Amanda retorts, "I'll send you a get-well card."

[Upstairs]

"I can see Cleary now, the Eve has come..." Music emanates from the jazz club turned "rock-n-roll." Only, Eve Cleary doesn't seem to be singing any differently than she did during her audition, despite her claim to be able to adapt her singing style to whatever way Kyle wants. This isn't rock-n-roll, but Kyle likes it, likes it, yes he does. Megan meets Ryan there and sits him down. She says she needs to confess something to him. She says this isn't funny, then laughs. (Huh?) Finally, she tells Ryan she was a woman in the most professional sense of the word. Ryan reacts with a big, "O-Ohhh." He's just glad she isn't packing a pistol. Meanwhile, Amanda visits Kyle in his office, swearing she has no idea where the missing journal page is, and that she's not harboring any secrets about Peter or anyone else for that matter. Then she asks Kyle if he believes her. Lucky for her she left out the "Yeah, that's the ticket" part. Kyle laughs, probably knowing what a fool he must be, and says he does. Then he promises not to mention the missing page ever again. Thank God! Meanwhile, Eve finishes the only song she seems to know, "I Will Be Strong." She sees Peter and runs over to thank him by planting a long wet kiss full on his lips. Amanda sees this and heads out of the room. Eve catches Amanda seeing her kiss Peter and runs after her.

[Courtyard of Kyle's the Restaurant]

Amanda is standing outside when Eve comes up behind her. Amanda tells Eve she told one person about their secret and how he wrote it in his journal. Amanda explains the past 5 episodes in about 3 sentences, then wraps it up by saying she'll never tell another soul about their secret. They hug, and the Eve ends in peace.
