Bump in the Night

Melrose Place
Season #6 / Episode #177
Title: ìBump in the Nightî
Original Air Date: Monday, December 15, 1997

[Peter's Marina Condo]
Peter enters the condo after wiping the blood from the right front headlamp of Lexi's car. Meanwhile, Lexi is busy inside mumbling and bumbling about. I wish she would take another Scooby snack so we could understand what the hell she's saying. But Peter suggests she go to sleep instead, in order to vent all that pent up energy of hers. Then he leaves in his car. He slowly drives down the street, the way he does when trolling for chicks. He looks to his right and spots some guy doing an Igor impression in an alley. Peter parks and runs towards the guy, telling him not to run away, even though the guy is having trouble just trying to limp. Obviously, this bum's been the driveway for more than his share of automobiles, his oil-stained shirt looking worse than my driveway. Peter asks him what happened. The bum replies, "I don't know," then proceeds to tell him, in detail, what happened. Huh? Peter asks him, "Do you remember who was driving the car, the color the car was, the type?" Again, the bum answers no to all the questions, emphasizing the fact by telling Peter the woman driving the car had long hair and was "not a man." Peter realizes, through his questioning, that the victim must have a leg fracture, so he calls for an ambulance using his cell phone.

[MP, Amanda's Apt]
Amanda is sprawled out on those dizzying sheets of hers. She looks over to find Kyle fast asleep by her side. She leans over and wakes him, kissing and nibbling him and telling him to make love to her NOW. Aha, so now I get what the title of this episode means! But just as they're starting a game of tongue twister, there's a knock at the door. The knocking persists, finally waking Amanda from what was all but a dream, and Amanda realizes that if she's going to "get down tonight," it's only from her pillow! She goes to answer the door, only to find Taylor in her face. Could this be just a dream, too? Nope, the nightmare is real. Taylor tells Amanda to have her lawyer draw up the transfer of ownership papers for the jazz club, since Taylor didn't like the junk mail contract.

[Peter's Marina Condo]
Peter's outside, polishing that damn right headlight again. In fact, if anything, it might be too clean, drawing attention to itself. Hey, this is Melrose, anything's possible! <shrug> He goes back inside, where he Lexi is sitting and waiting like a dog waiting for its master. She tells Peter she's thinking about going to rehab, especially after seeing the wonders it did for Robert Downey, Jr. She complains that she needs something to do, namely a real job with a design firm. Peter gives his approval. She kisses him. One thing's for sure... she may still talk funny but her kissing technique has improved to a C+.

[MP, Jennifer's Apt]
Michael arrives with a bouquet of roses, trying to win Megan back. He tells her Coop's doing everything he can to get back at him, and that Coop is even suing Michael for the Mancini Glove idea. Michael can't believe Megan would take Coop's word over his. Megan replies that she would believe a politician, a used car salesman, and even Pinocchio before she believed Michael. Smooth move, Spelling, the show's demographics were bad enough, now you just lost the politician and used car salesman viewership, too (No on cares about marionettes).

[Wilshire Memorial]
Two detectives, one who looks like he'd be more comfortable in a greasy T-shirt slinging hash at a place called Mel's, are busy questioning Bob the bum, asking him if he remembered anything about the accident. Of course he says no, then supplies them with some of the numbers of the license plate of the vehicle. The two detectives, Ryan and Smith, take Peter out into the hall and ask him about the accident, but Peter tells them he wasn't a witness, only a Good Samaritan.

[Burns-Mancini-Coop Medical Office]
Coop has Craig meet him at the medical office. Craig tells him if he wants to settle, to let their lawyers handle it, but that's not the reason Coop asked him there. Instead, Coop proves he's the one who invented the Mancini Glove, waving notarized plans that date back to 1995 in Craig's face. Coop tells Craig "You throw in with me, and we save your company together. Otherwise, you might be left with, well, less than zero." Jeesh, another Robert Downey, Jr. reference!

[Amanda Woodward Advertising aka AWA]
Billy gets a phone call from Sam, who's laying on her hotel bed in Seattle, while talking to blue-balled Billy. She tells him she misses him so much, which we can see by the way she's fidgeting while straddling one of her pillows. Billy admits, "It's kind of lonely here without my wife." Sam replies, "Well, at least you have Connie." I guess Sam really does know her best friend's M.O.! Only, Sam doesn't know that Billy has yet to give in to Connie's advances. Sam begs for Billy to "show Connie a good time" while she's away. Billy drools a little bit, but not because of anything Sam said, it's just him. They hang up and Connie enters Billy's office. She asks Billy out to dinner, but being nighttime and all, Billy's got a lot of work to do. Remember, people on this show only seem to work at night for some reason. Billy promises to take off time from work tomorrow night, however, and asks if she'd like dinner then. She agrees. Billy leaves to make a pot of coffee, and Connie strolls over to his desk and picks up a framed photo of Sam looking hot and wanton as I've never seen her before. No wonder Billy can never get any work done at his desk with a picture like that staring him down.

[MP, Jennifer's Apt]
Jennifer and Craig are lying in bed together. Jen is satisfied simply stroking Craig's arm, which cause Craig to wonder if something's on her mind... something other than what he'd like, that is. He asks her if Michael is really innocent, or if she's sticking up for him simply because he's her brother. Jennifer reminds Craig of the precedence set in L.A., where if the cauterizer does not fit, you must acquit. And speaking of gloves, when Craig realizes that about the only thing he's going to get tickled tonight is his wrist, he leaves.

[Wilshire Memorial]
Peter checks up on Bob Matthews, the bum, asking him how he's feeling. Bob says he's just great, and especially loves the hospital cuisine. Compared to what he got from trash bins, this stuff tastes like real food. Peter informs Bob that the hospital wants to transfer him to the county facility due to insurance reasons. But Peter promises Bob he'll do everything he can to keep him at Wilshire Memorial, even though Peter knows that once a person starts enjoying the meals from the commissary that it's time the person gets discharged. Lexi stops by to ask Peter to dinner, but Peter quickly shuffles her out of Bob's room before Bob has the chance to recognize her.

[Field/Mancini Enterprises]
Peter drops by the Glove business, where Michael, Craig, and Jennifer are just breaking out of a huddle where they were discussing the suit brought against them by Coop. Michael suggests to Peter that they kick Coop out of the practice. Peter refuses, citing that they just made him a full partner, which meant new signs, business cards, and stationary, and how expensive it would be to replace everything. Then in the next breath, Peter asks Michael to hire Lexi back to redecorate the office and that money is no object, he'll pay for everything. Is it me, or did Potsie Weber do a terrible directing job tonight? Practically everything in tonight's episode makes little or no sense. The bum's answers, Peter and finances... just wait until the spy cam scene! But I digress. Michael agrees to Peter's request, as long as Peter grants Michael an extension as chief-of-staff. Peter agrees to Michael's blackmail attempt, giving him two more months in the position.

[MP, Jennifer's Apt]
Coop drops off the CD's with Megan, the music he played for her while she was in coma. Considering these were her "favorite" CD's in the whole wide world, you'd think she would've realized they were missing. But then again, we are talking about the designated blonde here. Megan wants to thank him by making him dinner tomorrow night. He hesitates at first, but eventually agrees.

[Deposition]
Jennifer interrupts the proceedings just in time to hear Craig testifies against Michael, admitting he saw that Coop had plans dating back over a year ago, and that Michael misrepresented himself to Craig. Jennifer and Craig argue in the hall. Funny stuff... yawn.

[Wilshire Memorial]
Jennifer runs to Michael to tell him Craig and Coop are ganging up on him. Michael swears he's innocent, and Jennifer believes him. But then again, she also believes Autumn Jackson's claims on how her papa is. Jennifer comes up with a plan to find out what Coop is up to. She mentions that Coop is coming over for dinner with Megan tomorrow night, and talks about hiding a camera in her apartment so they can watch and listen to what Coop has to say to Megan. Jennifer refers to a "nanny cam" that she saw on TV. Needless to say, it's probably become one of the hottest sellers this Christmas (ahem!) so Jennifer may be hard pressed to find one on the store shelves. If worse comes to worst, she can probably pick up a "panty-cam" instead, although getting Megan to wear it unsuspectingly will be a pretty difficult task. Jennifer mentions that the apartment next to hers is vacant so all she has to do is get a spare key from Amanda, set up a monitor, run cable between the apartments, and viola! Yeah, right, like Amanda is going to toss a key Jennifer's way.

[Upstairs Jazz Club]
For once in my life, Taylor's lips aren't the first thing that caught my attention when I saw her in this scene. This time, it's the white top she's wearing, which appears to be a low cut number that she's got on backwards! Now if only she had *bleeps* as big as those lips of hers! She'd have Kyle crawling back in no time. She chews Kyle's ear off about Amanda finally signing her share of the club over, but Kyle just wants her to shut up. He leaves. Meanwhile, Connie and Billy are having dinner together, Connie recounting the old days back when she and Sam used to date twins. Craig enters and joins them for dinner. Connie mentions to him she's telling Billy some old stories of her and Sam's dating history. Craig says this sounds utterly fascinating, so much so that he immediately volunteers to leave the conversation in order to get them all drinks. While Craig is away, Connie asks Billy to slow dance. As their bodies press closer together, Connie comments that she feels closer to Billy than she ever did to her beau, Charlie. Billy, coming to attention, remembers that Sam's due home soon, so he breaks from their embrace and heads home.

[MP, Amanda's Apt]
Amanda, dressed only in her bathrobe, is sitting on her couch reading a book. Whoever said nothing beats curling up with a good book, obviously never curled up with Kyle. Amanda flips a couple of pages but can't stand it anymore and shuts the book completely. Then she gets up, apparently hearing familiar footsteps outside. She heads towards her open balcony window, from which she sees Kyle entering the courtyard. The two look at each other but their silence is broken when Sam arrives home, as happy as a Marylander could be, getting to live her life in L.A. Sam enters the apartment and finds a phallic sign, in the form of a champagne bottle, sitting on the kitchen table, along with a note. She grabs the bottle, then decides to see if the real thing is still available. She heads into the bedroom and wake Billy. He screams, "Who's there?" Sam laughs, telling him that Connie left a note saying she'd stay in a hotel room for the night so that Billy and Sam could make all the noise they wanted in private. Of course, the shades to their bedroom window are wide open, so as the two of them begin a little reconciliation, who peers in from outside the window but Melrose's newest single white female, Connie.

[Peter's Marina Condo]
Ryan & Smith, with Smith & Wesson, stop by to ask Peter more questions about the accident. Lexi wonders what accident they're referring to, so they tell her about the hit-and-run.

[MP, Jennifer's Apt]
Jennifer has a miniature camcorder and transmitter that fit inside a hollow book. I guess Radio Shack was out of the nanny cam. Besides, Jennifer's safe hiding a camera in a book. After all, when was the last time Megan read anything? Megan mentions that she plans on going over to Coop's place to fix him dinner. This would ruin Jennifer's plan, so she cautions Megan, saying Coop might misinterpret what "dinner with all the fixins" really means. Megan, recalling her days on Hollywood Blvd, says, "I've been around the block a few more times than you have." Megan, FYI: this isn't something to be proud of. Jennifer finally convinces Megan to have Coop come over instead.

[Wilshire Memorial]
Lexi visits Bob in the hospital. He informs her that Peter not only treated him for free, but is sending him to Arizona, a state known for its hit-and-run treatment center, even though the majority of the time they deal roadrunners and coyotes. He tells her he doesn't remember anything, even that the car was red. She gulps, then leaves. She runs into Peter in the hallway and realizes she must've been the one that hit him. She wants to turn herself in, partly because she's

[MP Complex]
I must admit, with all the recent departures, I'm a little confused who lives where and what apartments are bare. In any case, the Mancini duo is sitting in one of the vacant apartments, watching Megan and Coop on the couch. Coop reaches and places his hand on Megan's bare leg. This gets Michael upset, since he realizes Coop and Megan's conversation may not involve the Mancini glove at all, but may end with the Trojan glove instead. Jennifer volunteers to diffuse the situation by going over and interrupting them for a moment. Jennifer enters their apartment, then pulls Megan aside for a moment. She makes up the story that Michael has been calling and may end up paying a visit, and that if he found Coop here he'd go ballistic, considering Coop is suing him over the glove business. Jennifer heads back to the vacant apartment, but before she can get there, Megan confronts Coop about the lawsuit and Coop tells her how he lost a patient which led to the design of his cauterizing glove. When Jennifer returns, Michael tells her that Coop admitted his plans were fakes and that he's got them in his office. Jennifer promises to sneak the office key off of Megan's key ring, then snoop through Coop's files for the documents.

[AWA]
Amanda tells Sam that Blazed Out, the company in Seattle, thought Sam was terrific. So good, in fact, that Amanda promotes her from go-fer to ad exec, even though I thought she was the new graphic artist. Anyway, Sam feels guilty since now that she's back, it means Connie is out of a job. But Amanda solves that by hiring Connie as the new go-fer for Billy. When Connie hears the news, she once again gets closer to Billy than she ever did with her Charlie, grabbing and hugging and pressing him as close to her as is physically possible.

[Peter's Marina Condo]
Peter drives up in a nice new-looking silver Mercedes. Lexi takes one look and freaks out, screaming, "What did you do to my car?" Then she really flips when she sees the two detectives pull up again. They want to know why Peter released Bob. Peter explains that the guy was able to hobble around using a crutch, so he released him. They ask him where the heck did he disappear to, so Peter says Bob mentioned some relatives up north. Peter asks how their investigation is going and they reply that with all the leads, it should only be a few more days before they make an arrest. Lexi has a total breakdown after hearing this, and she rummages through her purse for at least a chill pill. Peter pulls her close and comforts her, telling her not to worry. After all, the two detectives can't even track down Bob after leaving the hospital, let alone figure out who hit the bum?

[Kyle's the Restaurant]
Michael invite Coop to dinner. Coop thinks it's to discuss a settlement, but finds out Michael is only interested in confronting Coop about his interest in Megan. Coop stands up and runs into Megan, who is ordering take-out. He mentions he'd like to do some eating out, too, and the next thing you know the two leave hand-in-hand.

[Burns-Mancini-Coop Medical Office]
Jennifer breaks into Coop's office, and in the dark, grabs at some paperwork she believes is the design documentation.

[MP Courtyard]
Jennifer and Michael meet back in the vacant apartment, where Jennifer shows Michael the papers she stole. Michael takes one look and realizes they're just copies, not originals. Just then, they see Megan and Coop arrive back at Jennifer's apartment, so they turn on the book-cam. When Jennifer fails to respond to Michael's questions, he looks to see why. All Jennifer can do is stare while the book-cam captures Coop performing mouth-to-mouth on Megan.

[Upstairs Jazz Club]
There's a sign out front saying the club is closed for the evening. Inside, Kyle is losing himself in a bottle of McBride scotch. Taylor brings up a tray of all of Kyle's favorite foods, in a desperate attempt to win back his affection. Only Kyle is on to her tricks, and he tells her to get lost. She reminds him of their recent lovemaking session, which he clarifies as just being sex. He adds, "The only difference between you and a whore, is that you didn't ask for any money." Taylor can't believe how mean is to her, considering they were once married and happy together. Kyle quickly corrects her, saying "No, you were happy. I was just a very good actor." Which is sort of sad, considering how bad an actor he is now. He thanks her for running to L.A. after Peter since it gave him an out, which was just what he was looking for. He grabs his bottle and glass and leaves. Then Taylor, in her best Scarlett O'Hara impression, vows the following: "I will make you love me, Kyle. Someday, somehow. We will be together. We will."
